MeyerStation
a nature community
Conservation--Habitation--Education--Preservation
MeyerStation is a non-profit
organization. It is a tract of natural woodland and wetland nearly one-hundred and
thirty five acres in size that borders on the Patuxent River separating Anne Arundel
County and Prince Georges County in Maryland.
We have hosted hundreds of
organizations including Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, 4-H clubs, school classes,
Audubon Society Chapters, church groups in the observation of natural flora and
fauna of this area.
The following creatures have been
observed in our habitat:
Birds
Eastern Wild Turkey, Great Blue
Herons, Wood Ducks, Mallards, Grebes, Red-Winged Blackbirds, Quail,
Dove, Hummingbirds, Bluebirds, Indigo Bunting, Red Shoulder Hawks, Sparrow Hawks,
Turkey Vultures, Crows, Grackles, Pileated Woodpeckers, Pine Siskins, various owls,
thrushes, sparrows, wrens, finches, vireos, flycatchers, and more than 200
species of birds.
Mammals
Deer, beaver, muskrat, Red fox, Grey
fox, rabbit, opossum, raccoon, mink, squirrel, weasel, field mouse, moles,
groundhog, chipmunk, skunk, otter and others.
Reptiles and friends
Snapping Turtle, box turtle, painted
turtle, diamond back turtle, newt, salamander, brownwater snake, hognosed snake,
black snake, blue racer, garter snake, toads, bull frog, pickeral frog, spring
peeper frog, lizards and others.
As you can see, there is a rather
busy bird, mammal and reptile population as well as thousand of species of
insects, fish, and other animals at Meyerstation. Consequently, all contributions are welcomed to assist in purchasing
feeding materials on a seasonal basis and to maintain and install various bird
nesting boxes. Other contributions may be made to assist in extending present
improvements to the new facilities( Deep Well Fund or Sewage Extension Fund).
These improvements will make the nature preserve a more pleasant place to visit.
It is felt that the area will become
one of the more valuable "nature communities" in this coastal region
with the uniqueness of being completely surrounded by residential communities
and readily accessible to those in that surrounding ring of communities for
educational use.
